Alacare Conducts Public Health Lecture at NACC

Alacare Home Health and Hospice was the focus of a public health lecture at Northeast Alabama Community College recently on the NACC campus. The lecture was presented by Amanda Griffin and Lisa Salter, Volunteer Coordinators Huntsville/Scottsboro & Gadsden/Rainsville Alacare.

Susan Barron, Director of High School Relations and Event Planning, welcomed those in attendance. “We are so glad to have you all here today for this lecture,” she said. She introduced Griffin and Salter who presented information on Alacare as well as volunteer opportunities with the organization.

Information included the company’s history, services offered, home health care, hospice care, and volunteer opportunities. Alacare was founded in 1970 and is in most counties throughout Alabama. It is the state’s oldest and largest family owned Medicare home health company. Alacare has 3,800 patients (all services) and employs over 750 Alabamians.

The purpose of Alacare’s hospice volunteer services is to touch hearts and lives by offering spiritual, emotional and physical support to patients and their families. Ways to help through direct patient contact include brief relief for the caregivers, helping celebrate special occasions and holidays in a patient’s life, calling patients and their families to offer a listening ear and an encouraging word, capturing the patient’s life review and displaying it in an audio/visual format for the family, and doing home repairs and improvements. Volunteer activities that do not involve direct patient contact include filing, mailings, designing of newsletters and t-shirts, volunteer recruitment and planning special events; participating in seasonal activities such as making holiday gift bags or baskets, and sending cards; baking cakes or cookies for delivery to families, especially on birthdays or special occasions; and creating craft items such as knitted lap blankets to enhance patient comfort. Volunteering is a great way to help others, gain experience, meet new people, get training that adds to job skills, achieve service hours for your organization, and just knowing that you have made a difference in someone’s life.
