Joan Reeves Honored for Outstanding
Service to National Honorary
On what was supposed to be a regular faculty in-service luncheon
recently honoring the guest speaker, Dr. Randy Cross, Joan
Reeves, Director of English and Fine Arts at Northeast Alabama
Community College, was surprised to learn that she, too, was a
guest of honor. Dr. Sheila Byrd, Executive Director of Sigma
Kappa Delta, who traveled with Dr. Cross from Calhoun Community
College, recognized Reeves for her outstanding service to the
National English Honor Society for two- year colleges.
As National President of SKD for three terms, a member of the
National Board since 2001, and chapter sponsor for fifteen
years, Joan Reeves has worked tirelessly, not only with NACC’s
chapter, Epsilon Alpha, but with the organization on a national
level. Due to her dedication to the organization, the board
voted unanimously to name a service scholarship in honor of
Reeves in September 2011. Dr. Byrd noted that because Reeves has
played an influential role in the growth of the organization,
she was more than deserving of this honor. Dr. Byrd stated,
“Sigma Kappa Delta is the fine organization it is today due
greatly to Joan Reeves' hard work and dedication at the local
and national level. She represents NACC and the state as well.”
Dr. Byrd also expressed her admiration of Northeast Alabama
Community College by stating, “Dr. Cross and I were very
impressed by the faculty, staff, and President Campbell. We have
discussed how lucky the students at NACC are to have this island
of culture in Northeast Alabama.”
While Joan Reeves has been an important founding member of Sigma
Kappa Delta, she felt that receiving this distinguished
recognition of a national scholarship in her name was quite
humbling. She remarked, “When I started teaching at Northeast,
my goals were to charter an English honor society and produce a
literary journal for my students. My Sigma Kappa Delta chapter
has made both these dreams come true for me. I am so lucky to
have a job that allows me to actually look forward to going to
work each day.”
“For all that she does, Ms. Reeves is a great asset to
Northeast,” Dr. David Campbell, NACC President, stated. “She is
held in such high regard by the Northeast administration,
faculty, staff, and students. We very much appreciate her
dedication to the college and the profession of education.”
