Alumnus Author/Illustrator to Visit CHD Students

Author/illustrator Steven Whited will give a presentation to Northeast Alabama Community College Child Development (CHD) Program students on Tuesday, February 7, at 4:00 pm in the Workforce Development Building, Room 132.

Whited is a NACC graduate who has written, illustrated and published a children's book, A Day with Sgt. Rocky Bear. Sergeant Rocky Bear is a colorful bear who works in a busy little town called Honey Pot Springs. The book follows the Sergeant as he conducts his duties as a police officer working for the Honey Pot Springs Police Department. The story has important character education tips for resolving conflict, being responsible, not bullying people, and understanding the importance of respecting people. The Sergeant hopes to help parents, peace officers, and teachers present the importance of making positive, safe and healthy choices to kids. The book helps to bridge youth and law enforcement.

Whited will speak to students regarding his children's book he authored and illustrated. He shares his experience of becoming a published author as well as the origin of his character and story line. He also discusses issues he has experienced with at-risk youth and the need for positive reinforcement of morals and manners which are slowly being lost in today's society. “Students learn more than ABC's today; teachers are teaching students conflict resolution, manners, respect for others and so much more,” said Whited.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to express the important role that child development professionals have in shaping the future of today's youth and the positive impact it has on society by assisting in the development of productive citizens,” added Whited. “I appreciate Mrs. Debra O’Neal, CHD Instructor, Dr. David Campbell, President, and the NACC community for the outstanding job and dedication put forth in the field of child development. It is an honor to be invited back to NACC and to share my accomplishments as a police officer and author with others.”

Whited is not just a children's book author; he is a full-time police officer and currently works as a school resource officer. Through his children's book, Whited offers safety tips for kids and creates a bridge between law enforcement and our nation’s youth. Trust, pride and respect for law enforcement is learned early on in a child's life but he also encourages respect for parents, teachers and others during a child's most formative years.
