Northeast President Named Jackson
County Citizen of The Year
Northeast Alabama Community College President Dr. David Campbell
has been named the Jackson County Citizen of the Year for 2009
by the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and the
Scottsboro Daily Sentinel.
“This is a tremendous achievement for Dr. Campbell,” stated Brad
Shurett, publisher of the Daily Sentinel. “I don’t think
anyone will argue that he is most deserving of this award. The
vision he has for Northeast Alabama Community College has made
an impact on not only Jackson County but all of northeast
Alabama.”
Campbell was chosen for the award by a committee composed of
government and civic leaders and representatives of the Greater
Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and the Sentinel. “I
am very appreciative of this award,” Campbell stated. “It is
humbling to be named for this honor because I know first-hand
that there are so many very deserving people for this award.”
Campbell has served as President of
Northeast since 2001. During that time the college’s credit
enrollment has increased by approximately seventy percent and
more than twenty programs, many in workforce development, have
been added. Under Campbell’s leadership, the college also added
an Adult Education program, which was named the best in Alabama
in 2008, and the Alabama Technology Network. “We have an
outstanding staff and faculty at Northeast and we have great
support from the Community,” Campbell added. “An award of this
nature really reflects on so many others who make great
contributions to the college every day.”
Campbell has been cited for his leadership
by other organizations in the past. The Fort Payne Times
Journal named him in 2006 as the annual Citizen of Influence
for his work at the college, and in 2007 the Fort Payne Chamber
of Commerce recognized him as the Educator of the Year. In 2008
the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce presented
Campbell with the Friend of the Chamber Award for “his
innovation in teaching and learning.” Campbell in 2008 was also
honored by the Alabama Humanities Foundation for “outstanding
leadership on behalf of the Foundation, the State of Alabama,
and all state humanities programs throughout the United States.”
Campbell from 2006-2008 served as chair of the Alabama
Humanities Foundation, a state-wide organization recognized
recently for the launch of the online Encyclopedia of Alabama.
Prior to becoming President of NACC, Campbell was named Most
Outstanding Instructor at the college. He also was chosen the
Most Outstanding Instructor in the Alabama Community College
System. In 2007 Campbell also received a national award for
Exemplary Leadership by the Chair Academy.
Professionally, Campbell serves on the Jackson County Economic
Development Agency Board of Directors and the Board of Directors
for the Impact Learning Center. He also serves on the Board of
Directors of the Community Colleges of Appalachia. Additionally,
he serves as a Committee Review Chair for the Commission on
Colleges and has conducted accreditation reviews throughout the
Southern states. He serves as the Presidential Coordinator for
the Alabama Community College System’s Master Teacher Program.
Campbell states that his ambition for Northeast is to continue
to strive to create an atmosphere at the college where students,
faculty, and staff can excel and utilize to the fullest their
talents and abilities. He also wants to see the college more and
more involved in providing programs and training that help local
citizens obtain jobs for themselves and their families.
