NACC Cosmetology Students Win Seven
Medals at State Skills/USA Competition
Northeast Alabama Community College Cosmetology students
recently competed at the State SkillsUSA Competition,
participating in cosmetology, nail technology, esthetics (skin
therapy), and the Cosmetology Quiz Bowl. This competition allows
students to demonstrate their skills and receive recognition
from the state level. The students were awarded seven medals in
four divisions.
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry
representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled
work force. It is a nonprofit organization serving teachers
preparing for careers in the workforce and provides State and
National competitions which allow students to showcase their
skills.
“We are proud of all of our students at the NACC Salon
Institute,” said Julise Clement, Director of the NACC Salon
Institute. “We are especially proud of the students that went
above and beyond competing at the State Conference and for those
who will be representing NACC at the National Conference.”
All first place winners will go on to participate in the
National Skills competition on June 22-27 in Kansas City,
Missouri.
Crystal Jones Cornelius (first place) will represent NACC and
the State of Alabama in cosmetology. In the cosmetology
competition, students demonstrate skills in haircutting, hair
styling and long hair design in four separate tests. Contestants
recreate two women’s and one men’s trend haircut and styles from
a finished photo. A display of creativity is seen in the long
hair segment of the competition through color and an “up-do”
hair design where these future salon professionals demonstrate
their skills. A parade finale closes the contest with each
state’s contestant walking across the stage with their completed
mannequins to present to the audience.
Kelly Guinn (first place) and her model Brittney Butler will
represent NACC and the State of Alabama in nail technology. The
purpose of the nail care competition is to evaluate each
contestant’s preparation for employment and to recognize
outstanding students’ excellence and professionalism in the
field of nail technology. The contest consists of six separate
segments; oral communication skills, acrylic application, tip
and wrap application, nail polish application, nail art and a
written exam. The written exam tests basic knowledge of proper
sanitation, chemical safety, salon procedures, etc. The
practical applications evaluate the contestant’s ability to
perform the most common nail services in the salon today.
The Cosmetology Quiz Bowl tests knowledge in cosmetology
covering hair, skin and nails from the Mylady textbook. In the
esthetics competition students are tested on their knowledge of
skin care including identifying and diagnosing skin conditions,
massage, basic facials, proper sterilization and sanitation
procedures as well as the application of both day and evening
makeup.
“As teachers,” continued Clement, “Mrs. Gilliland and I
participate in SkillsUSA because we support the leadership,
values, and beliefs of the student organization and the
opportunities it provides.” The SkillsUSA Creed states: I
believe in the dignity of work; I believe in the American way of
life; I believe in education; I believe in fair play; I believe
satisfaction is achieved by good work; I believe in high moral
and spiritual standards.
