English Instructors Get Acquainted with
Textbook Technology at Workshop
NACC English instructors and tutors recently attended a
technology workshop presented by Pearson Higher Education Senior
Publisher’s Representative Shirley Mergen and Technology
Specialist Glen Spencer, Jr. Joan Reeves, chair of the English
and Fine Arts Division, coordinated with Pearson Higher
Education to provide this technology workshop for the NACC
English faculty and tutors. The workshop was held in the Writing
Center of the English Building, on June 23, 2009. Pearson
representatives treated the faculty to lunch catered by NACC’s
cafeteria prior to the presentation. The purpose for the
workshop was to introduce the English faculty to the supplements
available for Basic English I and II as well as English
Composition I.
Pearson Higher Education Technology Specialist, Glen Spencer,
Jr. led the instructors through setting up accounts and
classes in three of Pearson’s online resources: MyWritingLab,
MyReadingLab, and MyCompLab. He further explained the available
content options to the instructors. Spencer then introduced
SmartThinking to the instructors, an available resource for
English Composition I students in which students can submit up
to six essays for review by teachers possessing master’s
degrees.
The workshop was successful in helping NACC English
instructors and tutors become more comfortable with the
technology as they more effectively incorporate it into their
class instruction.
Attending were English tutors Kayla Cordell and Cindy Holland;
English instructors Barbara Carroll, Carolyn Johnson, Sue
Pickett, Jody Ragsdale, Joan Reeves, Elaine Slater, Sue Smith,
Jessica Whitmore; and reading instructor Carol Wray.
