Three
Cups of Tea Kickoff
The IMPACT Learning Center’s Community
Read 2009 will begin with a Kick-off celebration at the Tom
Bevill Lyceum on the campus of Northeast Alabama Community
College next Sunday, September 13, from 2 to 4 pm.
It will be full of fun activities and learning opportunities for
students and adults wanting to learn more about Three Cups of
Tea, a book written by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.
The Young Reader’s Edition recounts the journey that led
Mortenson from a failed 1993 attempt to climb Pakistan’s K2, the
world’s second highest mountain, to successfully establish
schools in some of the most remote regions of Pakistan and
Afghanistan.
The Children’s version, Listen to the
Wind, is beautifully illustrated by Susan Roth. It is the
same true tale told from the point of view of children about
what they accomplished with Dr. Greg and it shows children they
too have the power to do good.
If
you are a student or parent of a student in the Jackson County
Schools or Scottsboro City Schools, Northeast Alabama Community
College will be the place to be this Sunday.
The College, in collaboration with IMPACT, is hosting this
special day. There will be a rock wall to climb, arts and
crafts, displays of cultural materials from the regions
described in the book, children’s readings, speakers, videos,
and, of course, tea with cookies! We hope to see students,
parents, and other adults living in Jackson County, at NACC’s
campus for this exciting day.
