Grant Received for Training Former
Hosiery Workers
The Northeast Alabama Adult Education Program at Northeast
Alabama Community College has recently been awarded a “Just in
Time” grant to provide funding to address an immediate need for
the employees of the Gildan Hosiery Incorporation in Fort Payne.
Gildan is the largest hosiery industry in the nation. Due to an
economic downturn, Gildan has lost several employees over the
past few months and will loose more by the end of June. The
hosiery industry has been the main source of workforce in this
area for the past six decades. These employees have dedicated
many years of service to the hosiery industry and had plans of
continuing for many years to come. Many of these individuals
being laid off are husband and wife, leaving no one in the
household employed.
“Our goal for this project is to expand the educational
opportunities for these adults and to provide educational
opportunities that will enable them to get a job,” stated
Randall White, Adult Education Director at Northeast Alabama
Community College. “These employees must further their education
and training in order to qualify for the new technology type
jobs that are coming in.” Some may need to obtain a GED before
going on to higher training while others may only need academic
brush up.
“Mr. White and his staff worked hard to acquire this grant,”
stated Dr. David Campbell, NACC President. “We also appreciate
the support of the Adult Education staff at the Alabama
Department of Postsecondary Education and of Chancellor Bradley
Byrne in authorizing this grant. Because of the economy and
layoffs, this type of opportunity is what so many people in our
area so badly need.”
Classes for this project will be held at the Gildan Technology
Center in Fort Payne and will begin July 1, 2009. If you are a
Gildan employee and are interested in these classes, please
contact Linda Sterling at the Gildan Corporate Office in Fort
Payne.
For more information on this project or to apply for a temporary
part-time teacher or aide position, contact the Adult Education
office at 638-2957, or e-mail
bunchl@nacc.edu. The deadline for applications is May 22,
2009.
