NACC Nursing Instructors Recognized by
Governor for KidCheck Service
Nursing instructors at Northeast Alabama Community College
recently attended a KidCheck Appreciation Ceremony with Governor
Bob Riley at the Alabama Capitol in Montgomery. Governor Riley
recognized school systems, nursing schools, and state partners
involved in KidCheck during the 2008-2009 school year. The
nursing students at Northeast Alabama Community College provided
health screenings to children at Douglas Elementary and DAR
Elementary in Marshall County; Collins Elementary of the
Scottsboro City School System, and many schools in Jackson
County. Approximately 450 children in Marshall County and 800
children in Jackson County were screened. This service provided
the nursing students with many hours of pediatric experience and
free health screening for the children. The nursing program at
Northeast is planning to include more schools in the 2010
KidCheck health screening.
This is part of Governor Bob Riley’s KidCheck initiative that is
being led by the Alabama Rural Action Commission (ARAC).
Governor Bob Riley said “The KidCheck Initiative is an important
way of ensuring good health for Alabama’s students. This is a
great way to find any health problems early so they can be
effectively treated. I am pleased to have the Scottsboro City
and Jackson County schools involved in the initiative.”
Students participating in the event received height and weight
measurements, BMI, vision screenings, heart and lung sounds,
blood pressure screenings, and dental exams by nursing students
of the Northeast Alabama Community College. Other partners in
the KidCheck events include ALL Kids, Sarrell Regional Dental
Center, Collins PTO, Wal-Mart, Dr. Mark Reece, Dr. Sam Holland,
Dr. Alex Holland, Highlands Medical Center, Brenda Miller,
Scottsboro City Schools Community Education Department, Alabama
Cooperative Extension System, and Alabama Department of Public
Health Nutrition and Physical Activity Division.
