Nursing Students Check Schoolchildren
at Health Fairs
The Northeast Alabama Community College
nursing students recently participated in the Alabama KIDCHECK
program endorsed by Governor Bob Riley and Chancellor Bradley
Byrne. The health fairs were conducted at Dutton, Rosalie,
Hollywood, and Bridgeport of Jackson County and DAR and Douglas
in Marshall County. The NACC nursing students were able to
screen approximately 450 children in Marshall County and
approximately 800 children in Jackson County. This was the first
time that the nursing students and school systems of Marshall
and Jackson counties have participated in this program. This
will be an annual event and more children will be screen next
year. The program was a feature story on WHNT-TV Channel 19 in
Huntsville.
"It was a great learning experience for
our nursing students," said Dr. Cindy Jones, Director of Nursing
Education at Northeast. "The nursing students checked blood
pressure, heart rate, lung sounds, height and weight to
determine nutritional problems, visual screens, and an
examination of their mouth and teeth. It was a wonderful
opportunity for the nursing students to interact with the
children in the community. This experience might even influence
these children into becoming nurses," continued Jones.
