College Wins ACCSPRA Awards at State
Conference
Northeast Alabama Community College received awards at the
Alabama Community College System Public Relations Association
2009 summer conference held recently in Montgomery.
During the conference, the Pyramid Awards ceremony recognized
two-year college marketing professionals who submitted marketing
items created and used during the 2008 year. Winners received
either a Pyramid Award or Certificates of Achievement or Merit.
The NACC Appalachian Teaching project Documentary/DVD won the
top Pyramid Award in the Video/Radio Program category. The DVD
was done by Don Reeves, Robert Moehr, and students in the Ethics
and Society classes at Northeast. It features a wide-range of
musicians from the area who have had a national impact. It is
one of a series of documentaries that Reeves, Moehr and the
Northeast students have created as a part of the Appalachian
Teaching Project. Don Reeves is Instructor of Religion and
Philosophy at NACC and Robert Moehr is the Director and Film
Editor for the DVD.
Debra Barrentine, Director of Promotions and Marketing, won an
Award of Achievement in the News Writing category for her
article, “Like a Good Neighbor—Hurricane Gustav Evacuees
Sheltered at NACC”. The article featured interviews with several
of the evacuees and a personal observation upon touring the
shelter site. Some 260 evacuees who fled the path of Hurricane
Gustav were housed on the NACC campus in September of 2008.
The Yearbook Staff won an Award of Merit in the Student
Publications category for the Backroads Yearbook 2008
“Picturesque.” This is the 35th volume of Backroads. Backroads
is prepared annually by students participating in the Mass
Communications classes at NACC. The sponsor for the winning
yearbook was Carolyn Jones; the current yearbook sponsor is
Jessica Whitmore, who accepted the award on behalf of Jones and
the Yearbook Staff.
“Mrs. Barrentine, Mr. Reeves, and Mrs. Whitmore and the yearbook
staff are to be commended for these awards,” stated NACC
President Dr. David Campbell. “It is very important that we
provide information to the community about all the great things
that are going on at Northeast and we achieve this through our
outstanding promotions and marketing. It is great to see our
staff members recognized for their accomplishments at the state
level.”
Barrentine attended the two-day ACCSPRA conference. Dr. Joseph
Trahan, Public Affairs/Public Relations specialist; Ken Hare,
Montgomery Advertiser Editorial Page Editor; John Bitter, Public
Relations professional; and Kay Yarbrough, Certified APR were
the featured presenters.
The mission of ACCSPRA is to enhance the image, strengthen and
promote awareness and public perception of the Alabama College
System.
