Quiz Team Invited to Nationals
The Northeast Alabama Community College Quiz Team has received a
coveted invitation to the Community College Championship
Tournament in Orlando, Florida for later this month. Only
twenty-four community colleges from across the United States
received invitations.
The four students who will represent Northeast include freshman
Casey Lowery, who has garnered five trophies for his individual
performances this year, Cord Pack of Sylvania, Garrett Monroe of
Pisgah and Tyler Hughes of Higdon.
“This is a great opportunity for the team and the college. I
hope everyone will show support for the team in the coming
weeks,” said Monroe, a Northeast sophomore and education major.
“We have come a long way to get to where we are,” added Cord
Pack, a Northeast freshman, who recently won a trophy for his
individual performance at Southern Union Community College. “I
am so glad that we are getting the chance to prove our worth at
nationals.”
Sophomore Andrew Burdette of Pisgah will accompany the team to
work on the tournament staff.
Northeast biology instructor and Quiz Team co-sponsor Kevin Holt
noted, “We have beat every community college in the Alabama
System that we have played and we have beat many four year
colleges in the Southeast as well. This says a great deal about
the caliber of students we have at Northeast Alabama Community
College and the quality of education they receive here as
students.”
Chad Kubicek, Chief Financial Officer for the organization
sponsoring the national competition, NAQT, stated: "We at NAQT
are very excited about our Community College Championship
Tournament in Orlando. With 24 of the top teams from schools
across the country, the competition for the community college
national title will be intense."
At the NAQT qualifying tournaments held on January 24 across the
country, Northeast earned more average points per round than any
other community college in the nation.
“It’s an honor to play on a team like the one we have here at
Northeast,” commented freshman Casey Lowery. “My teammates and I
have worked really hard to become the team that we are today. I
have little doubt that the combined effort put forth by this
team will yield anything less than a national title.”
“This is a first for us,” said Denise Patterson, Northeast
biology instructor and team co-sponsor. “We came very close to
an invitation last year, but missed by a few points. For the
first time since the team’s institution, we’ve made it. I’m so
proud of the team and the college for its support of the team.”
Patterson and team co-sponsor Dr. Daphne Huntley, Northeast
English instructor, will accompany the team to Orlando. The
competition will be on February 27 and 28.
