SKD Members Attend National Conference
Members of the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta at
Northeast Alabama Community College recently attended the Sigma
Tau Delta/Sigma Kappa Delta National Conference in Minneapolis,
Minnesota. Sigma Kappa Delta Vice-President, Jackie Smith served
on a panel, reading and discussing a student memoir. The
students attended breakout sessions and heard keynote speaker,
Neil Gaiman, author of Coraline and scriptwriter for the
movie Beowulf and the last Batman movie. Additionally, he
is known for writing the Sandman comic book series.
At the annual Sigma Kappa Delta awards luncheon, Northeast
students Devin Kennamer, Rachel Spurgin, and Jordan Hendricks
were presented with $350 Service Scholarships. Northeast English
instructor and Sigma Kappa Delta Sponsor, Joan Reeves presently
serves as the National Sigma Kappa Delta
Vice-President/President-Elect. She will assume the office of
National President July 1, 2009.
Sigma Kappa Delta is the English honor society for two-year
schools and was formed under the auspices of Sigma Tau Delta,
the English honor society for four-year institutions. The
Northeast chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta has initiated 1700
students since it chartered its chapter in 1996. Northeast
chartered the first chapter in Alabama and the fifth in the
nation. The Northeast chapter is presently the largest in the
