Two Faculty Members Complete 2009 Master
Teacher Experience
Dr. Sharon Totten and Rachel Walker represented Northeast
Alabama Community College recently as two-year college
instructors from throughout the state gathered for the 9th
Alabama Master Teacher Experience. The event, held in Rainsville
at Northeast Alabama Community College the week of July 12-16,
is designed to bring together teachers from the Alabama
Community College System for an intensive week of focus on
instructional innovations, motivational techniques, situational
problem-solving, contextual learning, and information exchange.
A product of the System’s Teaching & Learning Initiative, the
Master Teacher event is designed as a professional development
experiential learning event developed by teachers for teachers.
Participants gain cross-disciplinary experiences; therefore,
Totten, who teaches mathematics, and Walker, who teaches medical
assisting, had the opportunity to learn from and teach academic,
healthcare, and technical instructors. This type of experience
exposes instructors to best practices in a multitude of
disciplines, bringing fresh solutions to age-old problems faced
in unique fields.
Under the direction of Dr. Ron Van Houten of Central Alabama
Community College, the program has previously been hosted by
Bevill State Community College, Jacksonville State University,
and Lurleen B. Wallace Community College. This year,
presidential oversight for the program was accepted by Dr. David
Campbell, president of Northeast Alabama Community College.
Campbell participated in the Virginia Master Teacher Seminar as
a faculty member more than 10 years ago, and worked with other
state leaders to bring the annual event to Alabama.
“The dedication of Dr. Campbell, the faculty and staff of
Northeast, and the volunteer faculty members who served as staff
members for this program have combined to make this year’s
Master Teacher a truly inspirational and enlightening experience
for participants,” Van Houten said. “Sharon and Rachel were
valuable contributors to this week’s event, and I am certain
that other faculty members from Northeast Alabama Community
College will benefit from their participation.”
