Students in First Welding Class Earn
Certification
Northeast Alabama Community College
recently completed its first welding class, held at the Earnest
Pruett Center of Technology in Hollywood. Instructor Marty
Bishop was pleased with the outcome of the class.
“Seven students successfully passed their American Welding
Society certification test in the 1G and 3G positions with the
shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW)
processes,” stated Bishop. These certifications require students
to weld a project according to specifications. Once it is
completed, the instructor ships the project to a lab where the
project is inspected and X-rayed.
Mike Kennamer, Director of Job Skills Training and Workforce
Development at NACC, is also pleased with the outcome of the
first class. “This is a very good start to what I believe will
be an excellent program that will serve the community for many
years,” stated Kennamer. The college is preparing a facility on
campus that will house welding, machine tool technology, and
industrial maintenance when it is complete in fall, 2009. The
Jackson County School System is allowing NACC to teach night
classes at its Hollywood facility.
“We appreciate the partnership with the Earnest Pruett Center of
Technology that allowed us to start teaching these classes this
fall,” said Kennamer. “Monte Gant and his staff at EPCOT have
been tremendously helpful.”
Dr. David Campbell, President of NACC, added, “This program is
one way that we are expanding the college’s mission of providing
more workforce training for the community and we are very
pleased to see these excellent results in our partnership with
the Pruett Center of Technology. Northeast, along with the
Alabama Community College System, is dedicated to finding ways
to fund and support workforce training and retraining programs
for our area.”
NACC offers classes in SMAW, GTAW and GMAW processes intended to
prepare students for employment in the manufacturing, aerospace
and construction industries. The next welding classes start on
January 12. For more information about welding or any of the
programs offered by NACC, contact the Office of Workforce

Seven NACC students received AWS (American
Welding Society) certification after completing the first
welding class taught by the college.
