NACC Expands Programs in Cosmetology
and Massage
Northeast Alabama Community College President Dr. David Campbell
recently announced that the college will offer a new certificate
and degree program starting in January 2012. The new Associate
in Applied Science (AAS) and certificate in Salon and Spa
Management was recently approved by the Alabama Department of
Postsecondary Education and the Alabama Commission on Higher
Education. Options within the program include therapeutic
massage, cosmetology, and esthetics.
The college’s cosmetology program, taught by instructors Julise
Clement and Regina Gilliland, trains students to care for hair,
skin and nails. Upon completion of the program, students may
become licensed by the Alabama Board of Cosmetology.
Therapeutic massage is taught by Juli Roden and Debra Sewell.
More than just a relaxation massage, therapeutic massage
involves manipulation of the muscles and tissues to alleviate
pain, stress and discomfort. Students who successfully complete
the program may be licensed by the Alabama Board of Massage
Therapy.
Northeast’s Salon and Spa Management program is the first of its
kind in the state, according to Dr. Mike Kennamer, Director of
Workforce Development at NACC. “Since the vast majority of
students in cosmetology and massage therapy desire to start
their own business at some point in the future, we have built
business and entrepreneurial courses into the curriculum,”
stated Kennamer. “Our goal is to give our students the tools
necessary to be successful in their future endeavors.”
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of massage
therapists is expected to grow by 13% in Alabama and 19%
nationally between 2008 and 2018. Employment of cosmetologists
is expected to grow by 20% nationally and by 12% in Alabama
during the same time period.
The program, which was developed in response to requests from
the community, will be housed in the college’s recently expanded
Salon Institute, located at 105 Liberty Lane in Scottsboro
across from Western Sizzlin’ Restaurant. This state-of-the-art
facility currently houses the college’s successful cosmetology
program, which includes a full-service salon that is open to the
public. A recent expansion increased the size of the facility
from 5,600 square feet to 9,800 square feet in order to provide
space for therapeutic massage and a comprehensive cosmetology
curriculum that includes nail technology, esthetics, and hair.
“We are pleased to offer this program,” Dr. Campbell stated. “In
addition to course work in their field of training, those who
complete the associate degree program will be taught information
on running a business. We also hope that anyone interested stops
by our Salon Institute. I think visitors will be impressed with
how nice and modern a facility it is. Mrs. Clement in particular
has done a great job in designing and decorating the Salon
Institute.”
Registration is Wednesday, January 4 and Thursday, January 5.
Classes begin Friday, January 6.
